Nearly a Century of Caring

Nearly a Century of Caring: Haydel's Drug Store Opens a Second Location While Continuing a Legacy That Began in 1927

For nearly 100 years, Haydel’s Drug Store has been more than a place to fill prescriptions—it has been a trusted part of the Houma community. Since opening its doors in 1927, generations of families have relied on Haydel’s for personalized care, friendly service, and a commitment to putting patients first.

Today, that legacy enters an exciting new chapter.

On July 14, 2026, Haydel’s Drug Store officially opened its second location at 1297 St. Charles Street, Suite E, expanding its ability to serve patients throughout the Houma area. While this marks an exciting milestone, one thing hasn’t changed: the original downtown location remains open and continues to serve the community it has called home for nearly a century.

A Legacy Built in Downtown Houma

When Mr. Paul V. Haydel founded Haydel’s Drug Store in 1927 at 300 Church Street in downtown Houma, pharmacies were the heart of many communities. In addition to prescription medications, neighborhood drug stores often served as gathering places where friends met for conversation, families shopped for everyday essentials, and neighbors built lasting relationships.

Haydel’s embodied that spirit. The store offered everything from household goods and groceries to a beloved soda fountain, creating a welcoming place where the community could come together. For many longtime residents, Haydel’s wasn’t simply a pharmacy—it was part of everyday life.

The pharmacy also became known for its convenience and dedication to customers, offering prescription delivery beginning from its earliest days. Long before home delivery became common, Haydel’s understood that caring for patients sometimes meant bringing healthcare directly to their doorstep.

Standing Strong Through Every Challenge

Over the decades, healthcare has changed dramatically. National chain pharmacies, large retail stores, and changing insurance regulations transformed the pharmacy industry. Yet through every challenge, Haydel’s remained committed to serving the people of Terrebonne Parish.

That commitment was never more evident than during some of Louisiana’s most difficult moments.

Following Hurricanes Katrina and Ida, Haydel’s Drug Store worked tirelessly to ensure patients could continue receiving their medications. Operating with generator power and handwritten records when technology wasn’t available, the pharmacy stayed open when many others could not. During Hurricane Katrina alone, Haydel’s invested thousands of dollars to deliver medications to emergency shelters, helping ensure families had access to the prescriptions they depended on during an incredibly uncertain time.

For Haydel’s, serving patients has always meant doing whatever it takes to care for the community.

Independent Pharmacy. Personalized Care.

While much has changed since 1927, the philosophy at Haydel’s remains the same: every patient deserves personal attention and compassionate care.

Unlike the experience many people associate with larger chain pharmacies, Haydel’s offers patients the opportunity to speak directly with knowledgeable pharmacists without long wait times or appointments. Whether answering medication questions, discussing treatment options, or helping identify cost-saving alternatives, the team takes the time to provide individualized care that puts patients first.

Prescription delivery continues to be available Monday through Friday, making it even easier for patients to receive the medications they need. Combined with short wait times and fast prescription fulfillment, Haydel’s continues to provide the level of service that has earned the trust of local families for generations.

Growing Without Forgetting Our Roots

The opening of the new St. Charles Street location represents growth, but it also reflects Haydel’s continued investment in the community it has proudly served since 1927.

By expanding to a second location while continuing operations at its original downtown pharmacy, Haydel’s is making it more convenient than ever for patients to receive the personalized care they’ve come to expect.

As the pharmacy looks ahead toward its 100th anniversary, its mission remains unchanged: provide exceptional pharmaceutical care, support the local community, and treat every patient like family.

Whether you’ve trusted Haydel’s for decades or are visiting for the first time, the team looks forward to welcoming you at either of its Houma locations and continuing a tradition of service that has defined the pharmacy for nearly a century.
